Mekky was wanted by Interpol as the alleged leader of one of the most dangerous international crime rings involved in murder, drug trafficking and money laundering.

The 23-year-old Danish national of Iranian heritage had been based in Malmo in Sweden and is wanted in connection with two murders in Spain. In December Essex News and Investigations revealed Dubai had taken over as the Costa del Sol as a safe haven for criminials in hiding and a place to launder their illicit wealth. Mekky is said to be an associate of notorious international Moroccan criminal Radwan Al-Taghi, the head of the "Angels of Death" gang who was also arrested in Dubai last December and extradited to the Netherlands.

Dubai State Security services said intelligence showed that Mekky entered the country on November 14 2018 using fake travel documents.

He is wanted in Spain for alleged involvement in two killings in 2018 - a drug-trafficker shot when he left a family party and another man shot in his luxury villa - and two explosions.

Mekky is believed to have fled to Morocco before arriving in Dubai.

A Dubai State Security statement said: "Mekky was arrested following the efforts of a joint task force that included the Dubai Public Prosecution and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

"The task force ensured the arrest was made in compliance with the UAE legal process and in accordance with international legal standards."

It went on to say the arrest showed Dubai could not be considered a safe haven from international criminals.

It added: "The high-profile arrest sends a clear message that Dubai will not tolerate international criminal activities even if the crimes have not been committed in the UAE.

"It also emphasized the UAE’s commitment to fulfill its responsibilities towards combating transnational crime."
